The admissions process to the PhD programme in Journalism and Media and Communication Studies pays close attention to the applicant’s critical and analytical skills, the level of analytical independence, methodological and scientific maturity, and the ability to present research problems with scientific rigour in both previous research, and in the enclosed PhD research plan. It is of primary importance that the research plan corresponds to the JMK section’s current profile areas.

Entry requirements
The successful candidate to JMK’s PhD programme must meet:
a) the general entry requirements, which include a second-cycle degree, or courses comprising at least 240 credits (ECTS) of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle, or substantially equivalent knowledge acquired in some other way in Sweden or abroad, and
b) the specific entry requirements, that include an independent project (degree project/thesis) of second-cycle level within the main research field of Journalism Studies or Media and Communication Studies or substantially equivalent knowledge acquired in some other way in Sweden or abroad.
Research Plan
The research plan has to show the future dissertation’s aim and research questions, the empirical work covered by the thesis, as well as key theoretical and methodological considerations. The plan should also consist of a time plan for the accomplishment of the programme, and should comprise 7-9 pages.

In addition to the form, the application should contain the following documents:
- Official transcripts of academic records or other documents (diplomas, certificates, etc.) that support the qualifications listed in the curriculum vitae, including written academic works that the applicant wishes to cite as documentation of scholarly ability (research papers, reports, articles, essays etc.). This also includes documents that, in principle, are available at the Department of Political Science at Stockholm University. Please note that we can only consider academic works in English, Swedish, Danish and Norwegian.
- A description of the applicant’s main research idea (7-9 pages) within the framework of the research project, which indicates the principal emphasis of the applicant, and a possible dissertation topic.
- The applicant’s CV
- The names of two academic references, including their university addresses, e-mail addresses, and phone numbers.
