In Swedish: Kriterier för doktorandernas lönestege vid IMS

The assessment of the PhD student’s progress is based on an overall assessment of the accomplished courses and her/his thesis work. These assessments are related to each PhD student’s individual performance, and might differ from one case to another. As far as the course work is concerned, some students finish their courses during the first half of the doctoral programme. And some don’t, which could depend on the subject, specialisation, demands from research projects, and not the least the range of relevant courses, that might vary from one semester to another. The course demands and the number of thesis chapters might change, depending on the thesis theoretical and empirical respective main focus. Besides, the doctoral programmes of the Department’s three Sections have slightly different structures and guidelines. These are the guiding principles for the assessment of the PhD student salary scale:

50 percent of the demands met for the doctoral degree

CINEMA STUDIES

The 50%-seminar (including an introduction and two thesis chapters) and 75% of the course credits should be settled. This applies both to monograph and compilation thesis (out of which also an article must be approved for publication).

JMK (i.e. Journalism/Media and Communication Studies)

An approved research plan and 50% of the course credits should be accomplished (30 credits). The script must contain a clear research design, introduction, theory, method chapter and at least one empirical chapter. This is valid for monograph as well as compilation thesis (out of which also an article must be approved for publication).

FASHION STUDIES

An approved research plan and 50% of the course credits should be accomplished (30 credits). The script must contain a clear research design, introduction, theory, method chapter and at least one empirical chapter. This is valid for monograph as well as compilation thesis (out of which also an article must be approved for publication).

80 percent of the demands met for the doctoral degree

CINEMA STUDIES

All of the course credits should be accomplished and enough of the thesis script ready to allow a date to be set for a final seminar within a time frame of 6 months.

JMK (i.e. Journalism/Media and Communication Studies)

All of the course credits should be accomplished as well as all parts of the thesis.

FASHION STUDIES

All of the course credits should be accomplished as well as all parts of the thesis.

In summary, the PhD salary scale is part of an overall assessment by the supervisors, of the student’s accomplished courses and thesis work. The Head Supervisor will suggest, and provide arguments for the Director of Studies for third-cycle when the time has come for moving a PhD Student up to the next level of the salary scale. If nothing contradicts the supervisor’s assessment, the Director of Studies will support the promotion and inform both the Head of the Department and the HR Officer.

As the Director of Studies usually has a better general view of established practice and is able to make comparisons over time, and for quality assurance purposes as well, both the supervisor and the Director of Studies for third-cycle are involved in this decision.
