Focusing on everyday routines reveals a 'fashion system of the ordinary,' in which clothing has a distinct role in the presentation of selves. Taking a multi-methodological approach, encompassing visual and written sources, considering places and spaces, issues of gender, race and social class, fashion is presented as both routine and exceptional; as an increasingly significant part of urban life in the twentieth and twenty first centuries.

Professor Hazel Clark holds a PhD in design history, and a first degree in Fine Arts. Her scholarship has focused on uncovering new perspectives, cultures and geographies for the study of fashion and design, in Europe, the United States, and China.

She has served as a professional consultant and a fashion expert in the media. At the New School she has held public conversations with fashion luminaries including Diane von Furstenberg and Eileen Fisher. For further information: www.hazelclark-ny.com
