The Department of Media Studies (IMS) was founded in 2012 through a merger of the Department of Cinema Studies, the Department of Journalism, Media and Communication Studies (JMK), and the Centre for Fashion Studies. The three Sections of IMS offer undergraduate, masters, and doctoral education in four areas: Cinema Studies, Journalism, Media and Communication Studies and Fashion Studies. Courses and programmes are available in English and IMS welcomes a large number of foreign students each year.

JMK and the majority of IMS administration are located in Garnisonen while the Section for Cinema Studies and the Centre for Fashion Studies are located in Filmhuset, the Film House.

The current budget for IMS is approximately SEK 100 million supporting 111 employees including 14 professors, 22 lecturers, 4 postdocs, 21 other teaching and research staff (lecturers, researchers and projects assistants), 29 doctoral students and 21 administrative employees. Additionally, IMS hosts esteemed professors from around the world through our guest professorship programmes.
